Ingredients
- 4 cups whole milk
- 8 egg yolks
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 4 tablespoons cornstarch
- 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup butter
- 9x13 baked and cooled white or yellow cake
- 1/2 cup cream sherry
- 3 heaping tablespoons seedless red raspberry jam or preserves
- 2 cups sliced fresh strawberries
- 1 cup fresh raspberries
- 1 tablespoon cream sherry
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 1/2 cups heavy whipping cream
- 1 teaspoon powdered sugar
Directions
- In a saucepan, combine whole milk, egg yolks, sugar, cornstarch, and vanilla extract. Cook over medium heat, whisking constantly until the mixture thickens and bubbles. Remove from heat and mix in butter until melted. Let cool.
- Once cooled, cut the baked cake into cubes and layer them in a large trifle dish. Drizzle the cream sherry over the cake layer and spread raspberry jam on top.
- In a bowl, combine sliced strawberries, raspberries, sherry, and sugar. Mix gently and layer over the jam.
- Whip the heavy cream with powdered sugar until soft peaks form. Spread the whipped cream over the fruit layer.
- Chill for at least 2 hours before serving to allow flavors to meld.
