Sesame bars ("Pasteli" in Greek) are traditional confections made with whole sesame seeds coated in a honey, and sometimes sugar and syrup. Widely popular in the Mediterranean, Asia and the Middle East, these classic treats were considered "health food" in ancient Greece. Sesame seeds are one of the oldest and most prized foods on the planet - rich in antioxidants, calcium, protein and vitamins E and B. With roots dating back 2,500 years ago to Greece, Pasteli were the "energy bars" of the first Olympians. Homer cited sesame snack bars in the "Iliad" as the food warriors consumed to meet the demands of battle. At Haitoglou we still make our Sesame Snack Bars with a traditional family recipe. Delicate, crunchy, chewy and delicious, our pasteli are a great alternative to contemporary snack bars. One taste and you'll understand why sesame bars are staple snacks in many Greek households.
